A personal note:
Paul Penfold is a learning & development consultant - working on a variety of consulting projects - mainly HRD, training and development and technology-based learning.
Previously he was Director of the NTT Institute of International Education and Director of Studies for International School of Hospitality Studies at Nguyen Tat Thanh University in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
He also worked for 7 years at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, School of Hotel & Tourism Management. During this time he led a number of initiatives and developing a number of learning resources for SHTM such as the Second Life Virtual Hotel and the e-Teaching Toolbox. Paul worked closely with faculty and students to enhance the quality of learning and teaching in SHTM. He believes in using technology where it adds value, saves time, creates more effective learning, and enriches the student learning experience.
Summary of Achievements in Blended Learning:
- Winner of the Inaugural Teaching & Learning Innovation Award from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, 2009.
- Runner-up Teaching & Learning Innovation Award from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, 2010.
- Initiated the PolyU Virtual Campus and Virtual Hotel in Second Life
- Initiated and ran a blended student orientation program for SHTM Freshman students over the past two years
- In 2009, designed and am teaching First Year Experience subject for 300 SHTM students using blended mode
- Re-structured HTM2105 – a year one subject, into blended learning for 200+ students
- Set up SHTM Teacher’s Wiki & OBA Website to support teaching and learning development in the School
- Designed and launched the Teaching Resource Bank – an online pool of key resources for every undergraduate subject in SHTM
- Developed the e-Teaching and Learning Toolbox – a virtual Resource for PolyU teachers
- Co-Investigator in ground-breaking research project in Second Life Virtual Hotel
- Chair of the Hong Kong Chapter of SLACTIONS 2009 – the first global research conference run in a virtual world
- Winner of Open Learning Excellence Award from British Association of Open Learning 1996
